Singapore Like a Local
At the end of January, my husband and I will be returning to Singapore for the first time in two years to celebrate Chinese New Year, en route to Bali for our 5-year wedding anniversary. Singapore left a deep impression on us during our last visit, so I thought it would be fun to share our experiences from that memorable trip and offer a local-inspired itinerary for anyone looking to experience the city beyond the tourist spots.
Our week in Singapore was filled with delicious food, cultural immersion, and beautiful moments of nature, all while soaking up the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year. We were lucky enough to stay with a very good friend, giving us a glimpse into everyday life in this vibrant city. If you're planning a trip to Singapore and want to see the city through a local lens, this itinerary will show you how to make the most of a week here.
Why Visit Singapore?
Singapore is a place where modernity and tradition blend seamlessly. This tiny island nation is often known for its sleek skyscrapers and shopping malls, but beneath its cosmopolitan surface lies a treasure trove of rich cultural heritage, diverse culinary offerings, and lush green spaces.
Visiting Singapore is not just about ticking off famous landmarks like Marina Bay Sands or Gardens by the Bay—although those are certainly must-sees. It’s also about enjoying quiet moments around round tables overflowing with dim sum, wandering through neighbourhoods filled with history, or escaping the city buzz by exploring serene gardens and parks. Singapore’s incredible fusion of cultures—Malay, Chinese, Indian, and beyond—makes it a unique and unforgettable destination, especially when experienced during a festive time like Chinese New Year.
Our Experience Visiting Singapore
Day 1: Arrival & First Flavours
After arriving at Changi Airport, our friend welcomed us with the warmth Singaporeans are known for. Before heading to her apartment, we stopped at Tim Ho Wan for our first meal, consisting of mouthwatering dim sum. After settling in at our friend’s apartment later that evening, we indulged in Indian cuisine for dinner, savouring the flavours of Singapore’s vibrant Indian community.
Day 2: Chinese New Year & Gardens by the Bay
The next morning, we woke early for breakfast at a local dim sum spot called East Bistro, which offered a fantastic spread of traditional dishes at surprisingly affordable prices. Since it was Chinese New Year and our friend's birthday, we indulged in the best they had to offer. After breakfast, we made our way to Gardens by the Bay—a must-visit for any plant lover. The Cloud Forest was nothing short of awe-inspiring, with its towering waterfall and lush greenery. Lunch at Majestic Bay, inside the gardens, was another feast of fresh dim sum and succulent Peking duck. After a relaxing afternoon exploring the futuristic Marina Bay Sands, we ended the day with rooftop drinks at Atico, where we participated in the festive Prosperity Toss, an iconic dish shared during Chinese New Year.
Day 3: MacRitchie Reservoir & Exploring Local Spots
We began the day with a Singaporean Indian breakfast at The Roti Prata House, where we enjoyed flaky prata dipped in curry, a true local treat. Fuelled by this hearty meal, we set off to explore MacRitchie Reservoir. Though we didn’t spot the monkeys the area is famous for, the scenic hike more than made up for it. Next on our agenda was the Singapore Botanic Gardens, where we spent an hour wandering through the lush landscapes. Nature is always around the corner in Singapore, even in the heart of the city.
Later, we explored Holland Village and enjoyed lunch at Takeshi-san, followed by some shopping at IMM outlet mall. Dinner that evening was a memorable seafood experience at Long Beach, where the pepper crab and drunken prawns were simply divine. We even dared to try a durian dessert—an acquired taste, but surprisingly enjoyable!
Day 4: Rainy Day in the City
With the rain pouring down, we sought shelter at Mui Kee, where we had the freshest frog leg congee and dim sum. It was the kind of comfort food you crave on a rainy day. Afterwards, we wandered around the Shaw Tower and Takashimaya malls, where we treated ourselves to afternoon tea at TWG, the famous Singaporean tea brand. That evening, we headed to Sum Dim Sum for dinner, which continued our streak of delectable dim sum meals.
Day 5: Relaxation & Chinatown Adventures
We started our day with a simple dim sum breakfast before heading to a massage parlour and skin clinic in Novena for some much-needed pampering. The body massage was particularly rejuvenating, leaving us feeling like new people. Lunch was the iconic chicken rice, a dish so simple yet so satisfying, with perfectly cooked chicken and fragrant rice.
Afterwards, we explored Chinatown, where I bought a beautiful clay teapot from East Inspirations, an antique shop I had been eager to visit. Dinner that night was at a Thai restaurant near Little India, offering a delightful end to the day.
Day 6: Botanic Gardens & Farewell
Since this was our last full day in Singapore, we decided to revisit the Singapore Botanic Gardens and dedicate a few hours to exploring the National Orchid Garden. The sheer beauty of the orchids and wildlife made this one of the highlights of our trip. Afterward, we headed back to Chinatown for an all-you-can-eat hot pot and xiaolongbao feast. The afternoon was spent visiting classic tourist spots like the Merlion and an old temple before we wrapped up the day with Korean BBQ and drinks at a nearby bar.
Day 7: Departure & Final Tastes
On our final day, we had just enough time to try some Peranakan cuisine for breakfast, a beautiful blend of Chinese and Malay flavours. Before heading to the airport, we squeezed in one last dim sum fix at Tsui Wah. The egg tarts and char siu were the perfect farewell treats, bringing our Singaporean adventure to a delicious close.
Final Thoughts
Singapore is a place where every corner reveals something new, whether it’s the harmony of cultures, the incredible food, or the lush green spaces that contrast with the urban skyline. Our week in Singapore felt like an adventure through time, cultures, and flavours, and it only left us wanting more. If you're seeking a destination that offers the best of both worlds—modern city life and rich traditions—Singapore should be at the top of your list. Whether you're here for the food, the nature, or the unique cultural experiences, Singapore will exceed your expectations.
For our upcoming visit to Singapore in January, I’m especially excited about staying at The Clan Hotel, a luxurious escape nestled in the heart of Chinatown. It feels like the perfect base to explore the city’s cultural heart while indulging in comfort. I can’t wait to dive into the lively hawker centres, where each meal is a discovery of bold, authentic flavors—from spicy laksa to tender satay. Furthermore, I'm also looking forward to soaking in the spectacular nighttime views of downtown Singapore, with iconic light shows like Spectra at Event Plaza and the mesmerizing Garden Rhapsody at Supertree Grove painting the skyline in dazzling colours. It promises to be an unforgettable mix of luxury, culture, and breathtaking scenery.
