Stockholm Like a Scandi: 48 Hours in the Swedish Capital (Summer Edition)
Stockholm, with its charming archipelago and vibrant city life, makes the perfect destination for a quick yet fulfilling getaway. Last summer, my husband and I celebrated his birthday and my parents' wedding anniversary in Sweden’s stunning capital. Here’s how we spent a lively 48 hours in Stockholm, with a mix of nature walks, waterfront views, and cozy cafés.
If you’re visiting in a different season or have a rainy day, no worries—Stockholm is packed with amazing indoor attractions, too. For families, Skansen offers a delightful look at Swedish history with its open-air museum and zoo. Vasa Museum is a must for history buffs, showcasing an almost fully intact 17th-century warship. Art lovers will find inspiration at Moderna Museet, a modern art museum with a collection from famous artists like Picasso and Dalí. Meanwhile, Fotografiska is a dream for photography enthusiasts, hosting world-class exhibitions.
Now, onto our summer itinerary!
Day 1
Morning: Arrival and Hotel Check-In
We arrived bright and early to make the most of our stay and checked into Mornington Hotel Stockholm City. Located in Östermalm, this stylish hotel is in a prime spot for exploring. The rooms were cozy and modern, with a classic Scandinavian feel—just what you’d want for a short but sweet stay in Stockholm.
Lunch at Rosendals Trädgårdskafé
After settling in, we hopped on the tram to Waldemarsudde and walked to Rosendals Trädgårdskafé. This garden café is a true summer gem, surrounded by lush greenery and the scent of fresh flowers. The menu is packed with locally sourced, organic ingredients. We enjoyed an array of freshly baked bread, salads, and pastries that perfectly captured Swedish summer.
Afternoon Stroll and Waterfront Views
We spent the afternoon walking back toward the city center, pausing for a glass of wine by the waterfront. Stockholm’s stunning archipelago views and serene waterways make for a peaceful summer stroll, and it’s easy to find quaint spots along the way for a rest and a drink.
Exploring Gamla Stan and Dinner at Stockholms Gästabud
As the afternoon sun dipped, we made our way to Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s medieval old town. With its winding cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and historic charm, it’s easy to get lost in the beauty here. We wrapped up the day with dinner at Stockholms Gästabud, known for its hearty Swedish fare. From meatballs with lingonberry sauce to gravlax, this restaurant serves up local dishes in a cozy, welcoming setting—a perfect introduction to Swedish cuisine!
Day 2
Morning Ferry Ride and Walk Along the Water
After breakfast at the hotel, we took a city ferry out to Blockhusudden. From here, we enjoyed a leisurely walk back to the city along the water. This route is a fantastic way to admire the views and breathe in the fresh summer air. We stopped at Café Ektorpet for a quick coffee break—this little café is a charming hideaway with a relaxed vibe and homemade treats.
Shopping at Svenskt Tenn and Food Hall Browsing
Back in the city center, it was time for some window shopping. We couldn’t resist stopping by Svenskt Tenn, a well-loved design store known for its iconic Swedish interiors. For anyone interested in Scandinavian design, this place is a must-see! Afterward, we wandered through Östermalms Saluhall, Stockholm’s historic food hall. From fresh seafood to artisanal cheeses, it’s a feast for the senses and a fantastic place to pick up a unique snack or souvenir.
Dinner at Maestro in Södermalm
If you’re ready for a break from Swedish food, head to Maestro in Södermalm for an incredible Greek feast. This intimate, family-run restaurant serves up classic Mediterranean dishes with authentic flavors. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a memorable way to wrap up our second night and to celebrate both my husband’s birthday and my parents’ wedding anniversary.
Day 3
Morning Sightseeing and Last-Minute Shopping
Before heading to the airport, we took a walk out to Kastellet, making a stop at Moderna Museet on the way. The museum’s collection of modern art is impressive, with works by international and Swedish artists alike. Afterward, we strolled through the streets, taking in Stockholm’s early morning charm one last time before heading to the airport.
Where to Stay in Stockholm: Mornington Hotel Stockholm City
We stayed at Mornington Hotel Stockholm City, which turned out to be the perfect home base. Located in the heart of Östermalm, the hotel is just a short walk from many attractions, plus it has convenient access to public transportation. The rooms are tastefully decorated with a Scandinavian aesthetic, and the hotel’s cozy library and breakfast offerings added an extra touch of comfort.
