Day Trips from Phuket: Khao Sok National Park

During our recent trip to Thailand, we spent an unforgettable day in Khao Sok National Park, a breathtaking nature reserve located within easy reach of Phuket. Known for its stunning limestone cliffs, emerald-green lakes, and dense rainforest, Khao Sok is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Whether you're in Phuket for a relaxing beach holiday or a more adventurous escape like us, this national park offers a refreshing change of scenery.

Why Visit Khao Sok National Park?

Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand’s most beautiful and diverse natural areas. It is home to the largest virgin rainforest in southern Thailand, impressive waterfalls, and towering karst mountains that create an awe-inspiring backdrop. The park also includes Cheow Lan Lake, an expansive man-made reservoir with crystal-clear waters surrounded by jagged cliffs and dense jungle, making it one of the park’s most popular attractions.

In addition to its natural beauty, Khao Sok offers activities such as hiking, boat tours, swimming in the lake, and wildlife spotting. The area is known for its rich biodiversity, including elephants, gibbons, and rare plants like the giant Rafflesia flower. Whether you're seeking adventure or simply want to unwind in nature, Khao Sok is an ideal escape from Phuket’s bustling beaches.

How to Take a Day Trip to Khao Sok from Phuket

Getting to Khao Sok from Phuket is straightforward, with several options available. Many tour operators throughout Phuket offer organised day trips, which typically include transportation, boat tours, and meals. These tours can also be booked online through sites like Get Your Guide, Viator, and Klook, making it easy to plan in advance.

If you prefer to travel independently, as we did, Khao Sok is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Phuket. Renting a car is a great option, allowing you to explore the park at your own pace. Upon arrival, you can easily book a private boat and captain to take you out on the lake, just as we did. Alternatively, if you're on a road trip, Khao Sok can be a perfect stop on your way to or from other major destinations like Bangkok.

Our Experience at Khao Sok National Park

We arrived at Khao Sok National Park around lunchtime, eager to begin our exploration. Our first stop was at Khao Teppitak, known for its iconic "Heart Mountain," a striking formation shaped like a heart. We had lunch at Kieng Klong Khuean, a charming local restaurant next to the suspension bridge, where we enjoyed a delicious meal with a spectacular view of the mountains. We also made a delightful discovery at a small shop by the parking lot, where we had some of the best durian of the trip—perfectly ripe and fragrant.

After lunch, we continued to Ratchaprapha Marina, where we boarded our private boat for a tour of Cheow Lan Lake. As we ventured deeper into the park, the sheer scale and beauty of the limestone formations towering above us were truly breathtaking. We made our way to Khao Sam Kloe, one of the park’s most famous rock formations, and spent time taking in the scenery.

A highlight of our trip was a stop at Klong Ka Lakehouse, where we spent about an hour swimming in the cool, refreshing waters. Being surrounded by the towering cliffs and lush greenery while floating in the tranquil lake was an experience we’ll never forget.

After a full day of exploration, we headed to Wangwa Hope Restaurant for dinner, where we enjoyed traditional Thai dishes before making our way to Ban Keang Klong for the night. The accommodation was simple but comfortable, providing the perfect end to a busy day in nature.

Staying Overnight vs. Day Trips

While we chose to stay overnight in the area, it’s entirely possible to visit Khao Sok as a day trip from Phuket and return to your hotel in the evening. However, for those looking for a more immersive experience, the option to stay overnight on a floating raft in the national park is also available, though it can be more expensive. Whether you decide to stay overnight or not, the park’s beauty is well worth the journey from Phuket.

Final Thoughts

Khao Sok National Park offers an incredible escape into nature, and a day trip from Phuket is a great way to experience its highlights. From dramatic limestone cliffs to serene lakes and rich wildlife, Khao Sok is a true gem that will leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re an adventurer or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this national park has something for everyone.
