During our recent stay in Phuket, we made a day trip to the beautiful Phang Nga Bay, a stunning natural wonder that should be on everyone’s itinerary when visiting the region. Famous for its towering limestone karsts and pristine waters, the bay offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
Why Visit Phang Nga Bay?
Phang Nga Bay is known for its unique landscape, where sky-high limestone formations rise dramatically from the ocean, creating a surreal backdrop that feels almost otherworldly. Perhaps the most famous of these islands is Ko Tapu, widely referred to as "James Bond Island" after its appearance in The Man with the Golden Gun. However, while James Bond Island has drawn international attention, the real highlight of a trip to Phang Nga Bay is the journey itself. Cruising through the emerald-green waters, flanked by towering limestone cliffs, is an experience you won't soon forget.

There are several ways to explore Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, making it one of the easiest day trips to plan. If you prefer a fully organised experience, you can book a day trip with one of the many tour operators located throughout Phuket. Many of these tours can also be pre-booked online through popular platforms like Get Your Guide, Viator, or Klook, offering hassle-free options that include transfers, guided tours, and boat rentals.
For those who prefer a more independent approach, like we did, driving yourself is an excellent option. Our Thai friends rented a pickup truck in Phuket and together we made the hour-long drive to Surakul Pier, where we were able to hire a private boat complete with a captain for the day. This flexibility allowed us to craft our own itinerary and enjoy the bay at our own pace, avoiding the larger crowds and making spontaneous stops along the way.
Our Experience at Phang Nga Bay
From Surakul Pier, we began our adventure by gliding through the dense mangroves, which soon gave way to the magnificent limestone karsts that define the bay’s landscape. The calm waters made for a smooth ride as we headed towards Ko Tapu (James Bond Island), our first major stop.
While James Bond Island is undeniably a popular attraction, it does tend to get crowded, especially in the middle of the day. However, we found that many visitors stick to the eastern side, where the iconic rock is located. Fewer people venture to the serene western side of the island, where a beautiful beach offers a more tranquil setting and a chance to soak in the surroundings away from the crowds.
That said, for us, the highlight of the day wasn’t the island itself but the journey through the bay. Sitting on the boat, surrounded by the towering limestone cliffs and gazing out at the endless stretch of water, was an experience that felt almost cinematic. The sense of peace and awe that comes from being in such a magnificent place is hard to put into words.
On our way back to shore, we made a stop at Koh Panyi, a small Muslim fishing village built on stilts. This unique island offers a fascinating glimpse into local life, and we enjoyed wandering through its narrow streets, observing the floating homes, shops, and schools, all perched above the water.
