Chasing Waterfalls: A Summer Hiking Adventure in Western Norway

Western Norway is a land of cascading waterfalls, dramatic valleys, and pristine natural beauty—a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. A few summers ago, my husband and I embarked on a hiking trip to Husedalen and Vøringsfossen, two of the most spectacular waterfall destinations in the region. Here’s how our adventure unfolded.

Day 1: Oslo to Garen Camping

Our journey began with a full-day drive from Oslo to Garen Camping, nestled along the scenic Bjoreio River. The route itself was a treat, weaving through verdant landscapes, shimmering lakes, and charming villages. We packed a picnic lunch and stopped at one of the many roadside rest areas, where the fresh mountain air and serene surroundings added an extra layer of enjoyment to our meal.

Arriving at Garen Camping in the late afternoon, we were greeted by a picture-perfect setting: lush greenery, the gentle murmur of the river, and the majestic mountains surrounding us. After settling in, we rounded off the day with a cosy barbecue, soaking in the tranquillity of this hidden gem.

Day 2: Hiking the Husedalen Valley

The Husedalen Valley, often called one of Norway's most beautiful hikes, exceeded every expectation. A short drive brought us to the parking area in Kinsarvik, where the trail begins. If you are to do this hike, make sure to start the day early, as it is a long trek. The valley is home to four magnificent waterfalls—Tveitafossen, Nykkjesøyfossen, Nyastølsfossen, and Søtefossen—each more breathtaking than the last.

The hike winds through lush forests, past rushing rapids, and over rocky terrain, offering awe-inspiring views at every turn. Nykkjesøyfossen became the highlight of our day—a thunderous cascade surrounded by pristine wilderness. We enjoyed a leisurely picnic here, feeling dwarfed by nature’s grandeur.

Though the trail is challenging in parts, the effort is richly rewarded with stunning panoramas and the invigorating energy of the waterfalls. By the time we returned to Garen Camping, we were pleasantly tired but exhilarated by the day’s adventure.

Day 3: Exploring Vøringsfossen

Vøringsfossen is one of Norway's most famous waterfalls, plunging nearly 182 metres into the Måbødalen Valley. The viewing platforms at the top provide spectacular perspectives of this natural wonder. For a closer experience, we followed the steep trail down to the valley floor, where we walked along the Bjoreio River, right up to the waterfall.

Standing at the base of Vøringsfossen, surrounded by the mist and the roar of cascading water, was nothing short of magical. It’s a spot that leaves you in awe of nature's power and beauty.

After our hike, we took a moment to explore the area near the top, where visitor facilities and additional viewpoints add context to the experience.

Day 4: Back to Oslo or Onward to Voss and Bergen

With our hearts full of memories and cameras bursting with photos, we packed up and hit the road. While you can return to Oslo from Garen Camping, we recommend extending the adventure to nearby destinations such as Voss or Bergen. Western Norway offers endless opportunities for exploration, from fjord cruises to more hiking trails.

Tips for Your Adventure

  1. Timing: Summer is ideal for this trip, with long daylight hours and relatively mild weather.

  2. Packing Essentials: Sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, plenty of water, and packed lunches for the hikes.

  3. Accommodation: Garen Camping offers a cosy base, but book in advance during peak season.

Final Thoughts

This trip was a reminder of Norway’s raw, untamed beauty. Both Husedalen and Vøringsfossen left us spellbound, each offering unique perspectives on the power of water and the serenity of nature. If you’re looking for a summer hiking adventure that combines challenge with stunning scenery, Western Norway’s waterfalls are calling.
